About the Liberty Community Christmas Tree Program
The Liberty Community Christmas Tree (LCCT) Program is designed to lend a hand to families and older adults who are facing a difficult holiday season. This program is made possible by the countless volunteers and donors who help the Liberty Community Christmas Tree Commission raise funds and organize donations. A special thank you for the continued support from the Liberty Public School District and the City of Liberty.
In 2024, we were able to:
- Raise $76,450 through individual and business donations for gifts, perishable food items and other necessities.
- Provide food and/or gifts to 415 families with 1,065 children and 150 other adult households.
Applications for 2025 are currently closed. Applications were open Oct. 6 - Nov. 7. No late applications will be accepted.

Sponsor a Family
Sponsoring a family is easy and Liberty Community Christmas Tree will provide you with a gift card for each child!
Each year more than 370 families and more than 150 other households apply for assistance from the Liberty Community Christmas Tree program.
Volunteers are needed to help shop for gifts for the families and deliver the gifts, along with boxes of food that are provided by LCCT, to the family. Sponsoring a family is easy!
Attend a shopper meeting to select a family. Families are distributed on a first come, first serve basis. Meetings will be held on the following dates:
- Tuesday, Nov. 25: 8 a.m. - 6 p.m. at the Liberty Community Center, 1600 S. Withers Road (drop in any time, takes about 5 minutes)
- Wednesday, Nov. 26: 8 a.m. - 6 p.m. at the Liberty Community Center, 1600 S. Withers Road (drop in any time, takes about 5 minutes)
- Monday, Dec. 1: 8 a.m. - 6 p.m. at the Liberty Community Center, 1600 S. Withers Road (drop in any time, takes about 5 minutes)
The last meeting will be cancelled or end early when all the families have been adopted. If you are unable to attend one of these meetings, please contact the LCCT program coordinator to make other arrangements.
- Bring your valid drivers license with you to the meeting.
- Call the family you have sponsored to ask what their children would like for Christmas.
- Purchase gifts for the children using the gift card given to you at the meeting.
- Wrap all gifts and label each one clearly with the child's name.
Bring gifts with you to Heritage Hall to pick up the boxes of canned goods collected for the family on Saturday, Dec. 13 between 8 - 10 a.m. The address is 117 W. Kansas St. but you will turn north on Prairie Street from Mill Street to drive through the LCCT loading zone on the side of the building.
Deliver Food to Households Without Children
There are several senior and adult only households who sign up to receive food through our program. Volunteers are needed to deliver food to their homes on Delivery Day - Saturday, Dec. 13. Use the link below to sign up. Drive through at Heritage Hall between 8 - 9 a.m. and the volunteers will load your trunk with food and provide a deliver address.
Food delivery to these households will be on a first come, first served basis for volunteer drivers. Signing up does not guarantee there will be boxes left to deliver, so we encourage volunteers interested in delivering to seniors to come early. Volunteers are welcome to come through the line more than once to check if there are any more deliveries that need to be made!
Food Drive
Each household in the LCCT program receives 3 boxes full of donated food and the food drive is critical to making this happen.
Donate to the food drive - Individuals can donate food to the LCCT food drive by dropping off canned and non-perishable food goods to the Liberty Community Center, all of the LPS schools and Liberty City Hall. The food drive will run throughout the month of November.
Collect food as a group - You can coordinate a food drive through your neighborhood, church, business, etc. to collect food donations. All collected food items need to be brought to Heritage Hall on Monday, Dec. 8. Reach out to the program coordinator (LCCT@libertymo.gov) for more details.
Some suggestions for items to donate:
- canned vegetables (corn, green beans, carrots, etc.)
- canned fruit
- canned meat (tuna, chicken, etc)
- canned soup
- apple sauce (please no glass containers)
- mac and cheese
- brownie mix
- stuffing mix
- peanut butter and jelly (please no glass)
- dry pasta
- pasta sauce (please no glass)
- toilet paper
- paper towels
The LCCT Program will purchase perishable food items to go to each family, which may include a turkey or chicken, butter, eggs, milk and/or potatoes.
Food Sorting
Every year, each school in the Liberty Public School district as well as St. James School and other businesses in Liberty host a food drive for the Liberty Community Christmas Tree program. Tons of canned goods and paper products are collected.
Volunteers are needed to help sort the collected food and organize it for distribution. Due to the overwhelming response from volunteers over the last several years, policies have been implemented for efficiency as well as everyone's safety.
- Organizations and individuals must sign up and let us know how many will be attending prior to sorting food.
- Food sorting will be split into two shifts each day. Space is limited.
- Food sorting will take place at Heritage Hall, 117 W. Kansas St.
- No food or drink will be allowed into the Hall for consumption.
- Due to safety concerns, children under the age of 6 will not be permitted; even if they are in a stroller.
- Please check the FAQs below for policies on child supervision and other important information.
Food sorting will likely take place on Tuesday, Dec. 9 and Wednesday, Dec. 10.

Frequently Asked Program Questions
Liberty Community Christmas Tree Testimonials
Program Participant - “My wife and I are both disabled military veterans who are no strangers to hardships. The pandemic brought us even more challenges when my wife lost her job as a Paramedic and we lost are only source of income. We have weathered most of the storm but some sacrifices were made, specifically, Christmas presents for our children. We are so thankful that the program was able to provide us with relief in the form of food for an actual holiday meal (and additional meals) as well as the gifts donated so that our kids can have a bit of normalcy amongst all of our struggles. Seeing presents under the tree has given all of us a little more hope and we are so thankful for everything.”
Program Volunteer - “Our 6 children were so excited to adopt 3 families this year, 9 children in all. They picked kids close to their own ages for whom to shop. Shopping was chaotic at first, but overall they had fun and we're proud of their choices. They learned the value of a gift, and all the thought that goes behind buying one. They learned how hard it can be picking out things for people they did not know personally, while still wanting to make them happy. Even wrapping was done with extra thought and care to make these gifts special. I think their own gratitude will be all the more this year! My children (ages 5 - 16) enjoyed delivery day. It left a profound impact on me as a parent, how hard it must be for these families on the receiving end to struggle to provide a Christmas for their family. My kids' eyes were open to the face of poverty and struggle, and the importance of accepting others and valuing them as people, despite appearance or where they live. Encountering the gratitude of the adults in the homes where we delivered gifts was overwhelming. We met the toddlers we bought presents for, which made my shoppers excited. It was really a gift to us to bless these families, and filled our hearts all the more with the spirit of Christmas. I really couldn't ask for a better Christmas gift than doing this project with my family.”
