[ARCHIVED] Light the Square to Kick Off the Holiday Season and the Annual Community Christmas Tree Program

Ring in the holiday season with the lighting of Liberty’s historic downtown square on November 20.

The program, which will be held on the south lawn of the historic Clay County Courthouse, will get underway at 6 p.m. Prior to the lighting of the square, spectators will be treated to a collection of holiday songs sung by students from area elementary schools.

Mayor Greg Canuteson also will recognize first, second and honorable mention winners of the annual coloring contest. Contest entries were submitted by kindergarten through fifth grade students in all Liberty elementary schools. The evening’s events will culminate with the flip of a switch that will turn on the thousands of lights that trim the historic buildings around the square. Santa Claus also will make an early appearance in Liberty during this event. So kids, be on your best behavior and parents, bring your cameras!

The free, public event serves as the kick-off for both the holiday season as well as the Liberty Community Christmas Tree Program (LCCT), which lends a hand to disadvantaged Liberty families and seniors during the holiday season. Last year, program volunteers delivered gifts and food to 214 families and food to 128 seniors. This year the LCCT organizers are expecting the numbers will be even higher and anticipate helping close to 250 families and 130 senior citizens in the Liberty Community.
