The Liberty Police and Finance departments continue to receive calls from water customers regarding scams related to alleged water billing problems. The caller will generally say that the citizen's water bill payment could not be processed for some reason, such as an unsigned check. The scammer will then ask the citizen to provide access to their bank account, or for a credit/debit card number. At least one Liberty resident provided debit card information to a scammer, resulting in several hundred dollars being stolen from the account.
Representatives from the City of Liberty will never call citizens to ask for direct bank account information, or for credit/debit card numbers. Anyone who believes they have received a call from a suspected scammer should call the Liberty Police Department at (816) 439-4701.
