The City of Liberty temporarily suspended its online utility bill payment system on June 30 after learning that customers could potentially view names, email addresses and utility billing account numbers of other on-line customers. The site was reinstated just before 4 p.m. on June 30 after the City’s online partners VisualGov Solutions, LLC, and D&T Ventures resolved the technical issue and tested to ensure quality assurance measures had been fully restored.
Customers’ personal information is of the utmost importance to the City of Liberty. At no time was personal financial information compromised. The information that may have been viewable could not have been used to access personal financial information through the on-line system or by contacting City staff for more account details.
Credit card information used for automatic bill payment is viewable only to the individual customer. To ensure the security of personal financial information, the City of Liberty does not store customer credit card or checking account information in this on-line system. That information is stored, processed and accessed by the customer through an external financial clearinghouse.
In addition to the security measures taken by the financial institution to secure personal financial information, the City subscribes to security scanning service that tests and certifies the security of the online utility bill payment system daily. This daily monitoring of the site helps address concerns about possible hacker access to customers’ confidential data, and the safety of visiting this site.
