The Liberty Fire and Police Departments encourage home owners to ensure that their house number is clearly visible from the street. If an emergency happened at your home, would first responders be able to quickly identify your house?
Here’s a test to find out. The next time you’re driving back to your house, see how close you have to be before you can clearly read the house numbers. Take the time to do it from both directions. Then repeat the test at night. If you are closer than the edge of your property before you can see the numbers, then you should consider opting for numbers that are easier to read.
Fire safety experts recommend that your house numbers should be:
- Larger than 4" high
- In a contrasting color to their background
- Block letters as opposed to cursive (cursive numbers are difficult to read from the street)
- Mounted in an obvious place, such as near the front door
- Free from view obstruction from trees, shrubs or other ornamental fixtures
