Criminal Investigations Unit (CIU)
The Liberty Police Criminal Investigations Unit investigates reported crimes, such as narcotics activity, property crimes and crimes against people, and prepares criminal cases for possible prosecution. Investigators also assist with the Kansas City Metro Squad cases and the Clay County Investigative Squad.
The CIU serves as a support function for the police department’s Patrol Division. Primary responsibilities include:
- Processing crime scenes
- Investigating crimes involving persons and property by conducting interviews with suspects, victims and witnesses
- Conducting background investigations of prospective police department employees including truth verification
- Presenting completed criminal investigations for prosecution
- Reporting case clearance statistics

Reporting Suspected Narcotics Activity
The Liberty Police Department is committed to actively investigating all suspected narcotics activity. The Police Department is a member of the Clay County Investigative Squad along with the North Metro Drug and Gang Task Force, which supplement the investigative activities of the police force.
Depending upon the information provided, it may be investigated by the Liberty Police Department or forwarded to one of the other organizations for follow up investigation. All information received concerning illegal activity will be treated as confidential.
