Prevent Fires and Burst Pipes

Give Space Heaters Space

According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA)  heating equipment is the second-leading cause of U.S. home fires and the third-leading cause of home fire deaths. More than half (53 percent) of all home heating fire deaths resulted from fires that began when heating equipment was too close to things that can burn, such as upholstered furniture, clothing, mattresses or bedding.

Before you cozy up next to your trusty space heater, consider these safety tips from NFPA:

  • Designate a three-foot "kid free zone." Make sure children know to stay at least three feet away from space heaters and open fires. This zone applies to pets, too!
  • Give heaters some space. Keep anything that can burn at least three feet away from heating equipment including the furnace, fireplace, wood stove or portable heaters.
  • Don't leave portable heaters unattended. Just as you would put out the fire place, remember to turn off portable heaters when you leave the room or go to bed.

Prevent Pipes from Freezing

Water expands when it freezes which could mean trouble for your water pipes. Busted water supply lines can be a costly problem for property owners. Here are some tips to prevent frozen pipes during extreme cold temperatures:

  • Open cabinet doors under sinks. This allows warm air to circulate around the pipes. Be sure to move cleaners and harmful chemicals out of the reach of children or pets while the doors are open.
  • Keep the thermostat on 60 degrees or above. When you leave for work or if you'll be away from home for a long period of time, remember to turn your thermostat to above 60 degrees.
  • Insulate pipes. Install pipe sleeves or heat tape on exposed water pipes.
  • Know where your home's water shut-off valve is. Should a pipe burst, knowing where to shut off the water to your home can help you avoid a big and expensive mess.
