Every 2 years, elections are held for the mayoral seat, 4 City Council seats (one of the 2 seats for each ward) and 4 honorary positions*. The most recent election was held April 7, 2015 municipal election. Election results are available through the Clay County Election Commission.
The next Municipal Election will be held April 4, 2017.
Qualified individuals can file for office beginning at 8 a.m., Dec. 13 through 5 p.m., Jan. 17.
Municipal offices included in this election are Mayor, Ward 1 Council Member, Ward 2 Council Member, Ward III Council Member, Ward IV Council Member, and honorary positions of City Clerk, City Treasurer, City Constable and City Auditor.

The principal responsibilities of the Historic District Review Commission (HDRC) are:
-To inform and educate the citizens of Liberty on their historic and architectural heritage
-To investigate, recommend and keep a register of properties designated as historic landmarks or districts
-To provide assistance to property owners regarding the preservation or renovation of their buildings
More routine duties of the HDRC are to review applications for Certificates of -Appropriateness so that established guidelines are followed regarding exterior alterations of historic buildings
